Aside from maths and engineering qualifications I studied Music, Geology and French to O-level. I can read music and have rudimentary keyboard skills. I have an interest in the mathematics behind modern and ancient music. As an undergraduate, I was president of Cambridge University Caving Club CUCC. I am still a regular caver, and until September 1999 I was a trustee and assistant secretary of the British Cave Research Association (BCRA, a registered charity) and administrator of its research fund. In January 2010 I am due to take up a new trustee post as secretary of BCRA. In November 1996 I set up the Usenet newsgroup news:uk.rec.caving. I am part of the team that organises the national caving conference, known as "Hidden Earth", where I have submitted photography and art in the competitions (See my gallery). In 1995 I was responsible for the setting up of a specialist magazine for cave photographers and I recently won awards for contributions to cave photography (for my flashgun slave design) and for contributions to speleological literature (for my involvement with the Cave Radio Group). I was involved in the setting up of a special-interest cave photography group and, in 2002, I was appointed the editor of the caving magazine Speleology, which is published by the British Cave Research Association I am also interested in art, and am an associate member of the International Society for Speleological Art. I maintain a number of web sites including caves.org.uk, mcrosolv.demon.co.uk, and much of the bcra.org.uk site. I also did the original design for www.speleoart.net. Other interests include mountaineering, fell running, long-distance walking, cave art, photography, cinema, and contemporary dance. I have written regularly for the walking magazine Strider and had photos and articles in the cavers' magazine, Descent. |
